Fibre optics versus copper in business networks: when to use each

In enterprise networks, the choice between fibre optic and copper cable it isn’t a case of “one is better than the other” — it’s about knowing how to use each where it shines. Most well-designed networks combine the two. Let’s look at when each option makes sense.

Copper: the office workhorse

Copper cable (CAT6/CAT6A) is the natural choice for connect the workstations to the patch panel. It's cheaper, easier to install and terminate, and supplies power to equipment via PoE (such as access points and cameras). For typical floor distances, it's ideal.

Fibre optic: distance and bit rate

Fibre shines where copper has its limits:

  • Long distances: between buildings or separated floors, well beyond the 100 m of copper.
  • High-throughput backbone: connect back-end equipment and high-capacity main switches.
  • Environments with interference: immune to electromagnetic interference.
  • Future: grow-with-you capacity without changing the cable.

The hybrid approach (the most common)

In practice, a typical corporate network uses backbone fibre (the backbone between the equipment and the floors) and copper in the distribution (up to the distribution points). This combines the best of both worlds: the speed and coverage of fibre where it is needed, and the value for money of copper where it makes sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is fibre always faster?

Fibre allows for much greater data rates and distances, but to connect a workstation just a few metres away, a good copper cable delivers the necessary performance at a lower cost. The important thing is to use each in the right place.

Do I need fibre in a single-floor office?

Often not for distribution, but it might make sense for the back-end backbone or for high-capacity server connections. It is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Is fibre more fragile?

Modern fibre is robust when well installed and protected. Installation requires appropriate technique, but afterwards it is reliable and long-lasting.
