The Montijo City Council has selected DataRoad to install a biometric access control system at the entrance to its data center

The Montijo City Council chose DataRoad to install a biometric access control system at the entrance to the municipality’s data center, thereby strengthening the physical security of one of the institution’s most critical pieces of infrastructure.

What was installed

The implemented solution allows for the monitoring and logging of all access to the data center via biometric authentication, replacing less secure access control methods (such as shared physical keys) with a system that logs each entry individually. The project included:

  • Installation of a door-opening device with a biometric sensor;
  • Connecting the device to the municipality's computer network;
  • Installation and configuration of access control software, including event logging;
  • Set up the solution and train the team responsible for its day-to-day use.

Why is biometric access control important in a data center?

A data center houses an organization’s servers, network equipment, and critical data—in the case of a municipality, this includes local government management systems, resident data, and infrastructure supporting public services. A biometric access control system eliminates the risk of lost, copied, or uncontrolled sharing of keys and ensures an auditable record of who accessed the facility and when—an increasingly important requirement in the context of compliance and information security in the public sector.

Unlike cards or codes, biometric data cannot be lent to others or forgotten, which significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access to one of the most sensitive parts of any organization’s technological infrastructure.

Security and Infrastructure Services for the Public Sector

DataRoad has experience supporting public agencies in projects that combine network infrastructure and physical security, including:

  • Biometric and card-based access control systems;
  • Installation and certification of structured cabling in data centers and server racks;
  • Configuration of access management and logging software;
  • Training of internal teams to use the installed solutions independently.

Customer Benefits

  • Enhanced physical security at the data center, with restricted and controlled access;
  • An individual, auditable record of each entry, which is essential for compliance;
  • Elimination of the risk associated with shared or lost physical keys;
  • A team that is fully trained and capable of independently managing the system after installation.

DataRoad would like to thank the Montijo City Council for choosing our IT consulting, IT support, and computer network management and maintenance services.

Backup and Disaster Recovery: What an SME Needs to Know

Many small and medium-sized businesses only discover that their backup isn’t working at the worst possible moment: when they actually need it. The difference between a few hours of downtime and permanent data loss almost always lies in how the backup and disaster recovery strategy was planned—not just executed. Backup is not the same as disaster recovery. A backup is a copy of the data. A

In-House IT Department vs. Outsourcing: A Comparison of Costs and Benefits

When an SME reaches a certain volume of IT support requests, the same question always arises: Is it worth hiring an in-house IT technician, or does it make more sense to keep—or start using—an external vendor on a retainer basis? There is no one-size-fits-all answer, but there are objective criteria that can help you decide. The actual cost of an in-house technician Salary is only part of the picture

Signs That Your Company Needs to Switch IT Providers

Switching IT vendors is a decision that many companies put off—out of fear of the transition, out of inertia, or simply because “that’s just how it’s been for years.” But there are clear signs that a provider is no longer meeting the company’s needs, and recognizing them early prevents support issues from turning into business problems. 1. Increasingly long response times If a request

Cybersecurity Checklist for SMEs in Portugal

Most cyberattacks on Portuguese SMEs do not target large corporations—they target smaller companies, precisely because, on average, they have fewer defenses in place. This checklist outlines the essential protections that any SME should have in place, regardless of its industry. 1. Dedicated firewall and network segmentation A properly configured firewall is the first line of defense between a company’s internal network and the outside world. In companies

What Is an MSP and Why Are Portuguese Companies Choosing to Outsource IT?

More and more Portuguese companies—especially SMEs with between 10 and 200 employees—are replacing the traditional model of “calling a technician when something breaks” with a contract with an MSP (Managed Service Provider). But what exactly is an MSP, and why is this model growing so rapidly in Portugal? What Is an MSP? An MSP is a specialized company that takes on,

How Much Does IT Support Cost for a Company in Portugal?

One of the first questions any manager asks before hiring IT support is simple: how much will it cost? The answer isn’t a single figure—it depends on the number of workstations, the criticality of the systems, and the desired service level. But it is possible to provide a realistic estimate based on the most commonly used contracting models in Portugal. The two most common models: one-time fee vs. monthly retainer
