International Success Story: Expansion of the Wireless Network at Boavista Palace Serviced Apartments (Porto) – 72 Wi-Fi Networks

Serviced Apartments Boavista Palace, located near Av. da Boavista in Porto, chose DataRoad for a critical project: the expansion and optimization of its wireless network to support 72 apartments spread across 8 floors in two buildings, ensuring stable Wi-Fi coverage, enhanced security, and a consistent user experience for guests and staff.

The project involved a total of 85 network devices, including switches and wireless access points, with a clear goal: to ensure an infrastructure capable of handling high-demand environments—where connectivity cannot fail.

About Boavista Palace: a resort focused on modernity, comfort, and the guest experience

The Boavista Palace is located in a prominent business district in the city of Porto, near the Carolina Michaëlis Metro Station, and offers amenities such as a terrace and a gym.

The Serviced Apartments consist of 72 units of various types (T1K and T1+1K), designed to suit today’s lifestyle, with a strong emphasis on design, overall quality, and premium finishes, including indirect lighting, soundproofing, and welcome amenities.

In a context like this, Wi-Fi quality has a direct impact on:

  • guest satisfaction and retention,

The Challenge: High-performance Wi-Fi with complete privacy for each apartment

Wi-Fi networks in multi-unit settings (apartments, hotels, college dorms, co-living spaces) face specific challenges:

  1. Privacy and Isolation
Each apartment must have its own separate and secure network, preventing any possibility of access between units.
  2. Bandwidth Management (QoS / bandwidth management)
It is essential to manage internet usage on a per-apartment basis to ensure fairness and stability, preventing any one unit from affecting all the others.
  3. Full coverage in multi-story buildings and apartment complexes
Building materials, floor plans, structural obstructions, and distances require technical planning to eliminate dead zones and signal drops.
  4. Security and Redundancy for Internet Access
The internet connection must be protected by a security gateway and, whenever possible, have redundancy to increase availability.

The DataRoad Solution: Wi-Fi per apartment with VLANs, security, and bandwidth management

DataRoad designed and implemented a solution in which each apartment has its own separate and secure wireless network, with VLAN (Virtual LAN) segmentation and access control tailored to the environment.

In addition, the architecture was designed to allow for bandwidth management on a per-apartment basis, ensuring:

  • greater stability for everyone,
  • greater service predictability,
  • and a consistent experience throughout the day.

Services Provided (IT Networking + Enterprise Wi-Fi)

1) Coverage consulting and planning (approximately 85 devices)

DataRoad provided technical consulting services to determine the optimal locations for access points and network equipment, taking into account:

  • layout by floor,
  • division into two blocks,
  • usage density,
  • interference,
  • and coverage/roaming requirements.

Result: a real-world performance-oriented network design in a residential environment, reducing rework and maximizing efficiency.

2) Installation and configuration of wireless access points for 8 floors (2 buildings)

Several access points were installed and configured to ensure:

  • uniform coverage,
  • signal stability,
  • efficient roaming,
  • capacity for multiple devices per apartment.

3) Security gateway + Internet redundancy

Implementation of a security gateway to:

  • perimeter protection,
  • control and segmentation,
  • implementation of security policies,
  • and supports redundancy for Internet access, increasing availability.

4) Installation and configuration of switches and VLAN segmentation

Installation and configuration of network switches and implementation of VLANs (Virtual LANs) for:

  • separate wireless networks by apartment,
  • protect units from one another,
  • create segmentation for internal networks (e.g., management/services), where applicable,
  • and facilitate future monitoring and maintenance.

5) Wireless Network Optimization and Tuning

After installation, configuration adjustments and optimizations were made, focusing on:

  • channels and power (interference reduction),
  • roaming patterns,
  • authentication stability,
  • and consistent performance.

6) Future maintenance with monitoring and alerts — “IT Unlimited” contract

To ensure continuity and prevent incidents, an “IT Unlimited” maintenance contract was put in place, which includes:

  • monitoring,
  • alarmist (warnings),
  • and proactive support.

Benefits delivered: security, stability, and a superior guest experience

Although each infrastructure has its own metrics and depends on multiple factors, the direct impact of a well-designed Wi-Fi architecture in multi-unit environments is clear:

Wireless network per apartment (isolated and secure)
Improves privacy, security, and user confidence.

Bandwidth management per unit
Prevents abuse and service degradation for everyone.

Consistent Wi-Fi coverage across 8 floors and two buildings
Reduces complaints and increases satisfaction.

Infrastructure designed for scalability and maintenance
Segmentation and management facilitate evolution and troubleshooting.

Higher availability with a security gateway and redundancy
Fewer outages, greater operational continuity.

Backup and Disaster Recovery: What an SME Needs to Know

Many small and medium-sized businesses only discover that their backup isn’t working at the worst possible moment: when they actually need it. The difference between a few hours of downtime and permanent data loss almost always lies in how the backup and disaster recovery strategy was planned—not just executed. Backup is not the same as disaster recovery. A backup is a copy of the data. A

In-House IT Department vs. Outsourcing: A Comparison of Costs and Benefits

When an SME reaches a certain volume of IT support requests, the same question always arises: Is it worth hiring an in-house IT technician, or does it make more sense to keep—or start using—an external vendor on a retainer basis? There is no one-size-fits-all answer, but there are objective criteria that can help you decide. The actual cost of an in-house technician Salary is only part of the picture

Signs That Your Company Needs to Switch IT Providers

Switching IT vendors is a decision that many companies put off—out of fear of the transition, out of inertia, or simply because “that’s just how it’s been for years.” But there are clear signs that a provider is no longer meeting the company’s needs, and recognizing them early prevents support issues from turning into business problems. 1. What Is an MSP and Why Are Portuguese Companies Choosing to Outsource IT?

More and more Portuguese companies—especially SMEs with between 10 and 200 employees—are replacing the traditional model of “calling a technician when something breaks” with a contract with an MSP (Managed Service Provider). How Much Does IT Support Cost for a Company in Portugal?

One of the first questions any manager asks before hiring IT support is simple: how much will it cost?
